Company

Crafter + Mogford Golf Strategies is the new name adopted by Golf Strategies - International Golf Course Architects in 2006 to better reflect the identity and talents of the two principals, Neil Crafter of Adelaide and Paul Mogford of Melbourne.

In 1992 Golf Strategies was formed to combine the skills of Brian and Neil Crafter with those of
John Griffiths. In 2002 Golf Strategies opened an office in Melbourne, headed up by Paul Mogford, to
service the growing work-load in the eastern states of Australia. Golf Strategies original focus was
on the design of new golf courses in Asia, and we now have a number of courses completed and
open for play in Malaysia and China, with further projects under active design in Malaysia, China,
Vietnam and India. In addition, Golf Strategies has a strong portfolio of completed and current
projects within Australia including new courses and reconstructions of existing courses.

LPGA professional and television commentator Jane Crafter, the well known sister of Neil Crafter, joined the firm in 2005 as a design consultant and is available for project endorsement and specialised input to projects with respect to golf for women.

Golf Strategies has an experienced team of construction supervisors and course shapers
who are well versed in modern golf course construction techniques. This experience, coupled
with regular site inspections by the design team, enables the designer’s vision to be brought
to reality.

Golf Strategies is also able to provide the services of urban planners, clubhouse and resort
architects, irrigation designers, landscape architects and soil / turfgrass specialists.

As golf course architects, we are committed to preserving the unique traditions of this great
game of golf by designing golf courses that will stand the test of time and be enjoyed by
golfers of all standards.
Together they have over 60 complete or current golf projects in Australia and Asia to their credit.

Neil Crafter

Neil Crafter is a 1980 graduate of Adelaide University with a Bachelor of Architecture where he was a member of the University golf team and was selected numerous times in the All-Australian University team. Neil has an illustrious record as an amateur golfer, representing Australia on four occasions, including the 1984 World Amateur Teams Championship, the Eisenhower Cup. He is a founding member of the Society of Australian Golf Course Architects and has over 16 years experience as a golf course architect. Neil has formal qualifications as an architect and in 1997 Neil was elected President of the Society of Australian Golf Course Architects until his retirement from this position in 2003. Neil is co-editor of the Society’s annual magazine ‘Golf Architecture’, widely regarded worldwide as the premier publication on golf course architecture.

Neil has had the invaluable experience of having competed in all the Australian Amateur Championships and Interstate Teams Matches from 1980 to 1992, a level of amateur golf experience unmatched in practising Australian golf course architects. He was a semi-finalist in the Amateur Championship of 1990 at Royal Queensland, losing to eventual champion Chris Gray. Additionally, he has played in numerous State Open Championships including those of New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria and South Australia, and has won leading amateur honours in both the Victorian Open (1985) and the South Australian Open (a number of times). He has also competed in the Australian Open Championship in 1983, 1984 and 1987.

Paul Mogford

Paul Mogford graduated from Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) in 1994 with a Bachelor of Landscape Architecture. His final thesis explored the environmental design of golf courses, with a particular focus on the now common-place integration of constructed wetlands within new golf course developments.

In 1994 Paul was commissioned by the Society of Australian Golf Course Architects to research both the detrimental and positive environmental issues associated with golf courses. In addition to preparing a detailed set of research folders for the members, Paul authored the Society’s publication ‘Golf Courses: Benefits to Community & Environment’ and holds the role of ‘Environmental Research Officer’. It is acknowledged that the work Paul completed in this area contributed to quelling criticism from environmental groups as well as informed them as to the many valuable contributions golf courses provide to the broader society and the environment.

Paul is a qualified landscape architect and golf course architect, and is a full member of the Society of Australian Golf Course Architects. He has been co-editor with Neil Crafter, since 1997, of the Society’s annual journal ‘Golf Architecture’. In 2000 Paul was the recipient of the inaugural ‘Rainbird Grand Tour Scholarship’, one of two young architects selected worldwide. The tour enabled Paul to visit and study many of the best courses in the United States of America, including Pebble Beach, Cypress Point, San Francisco, Riviera, Shadow Creek, Castle Pines, Cherry Hills and Colonial Golf Club to name a few.

John Griffiths
John Griffiths is a qualified town planner and a director of the Development Planning Strategies
group, of which Golf Strategies is the golf design arm. He brings to Golf Strategies extensive
